Winter 1620-1624

The night when the two of them ran away from the village was very vivid in Haiete's mind and she could swear she was still feeling Renost's firm hand almost crushing her fingers.Back then, in that awful night, they had nothing but the clothes they were wearing and the dreams of a better life.

The situation hasn't changed too much in the past four years.

They arrived in Paris a month later, exhausted and starved after the long journey and the big grey capital, with it's slimy narrow streets did not proved to be what they expected.Having no money, the two of them spent their first night there on the streets, dead with cold.

After a couple of days they managed to find a miserable garret to rent and Renost got a job as a gravedigger.Even if Haiete wasn't too happy about it, it was either this or la Cour des miracles and panhandling or prostitution wasn't exactly what the young girl wanted to do for the rest of her life.

While her husband was working, Haiete spent her time sewing clothes for their neighbours, cooking or dishing the dirt with the sieves.

In that winter she gave birth to a weak baby girl, whom they rushed to christen.Renost feared that he'll have to dig in his own child's grave, but the little girl managed to survive.

But digging in the frozen clay all day long only to get back home after that to a disgruntled and peevish wife was a hard life for Renost, who soon found his solace in a bottle, spending his wage on alcohol.
