Princess Blanche dashed away her tears and continued to watch her daughter, Isabelle, playing alone.Since her illness and the death of her twin sister the little girl wasn't the same. She used to be a healthy and happy baby, brimming over with vitality, but since her disease the blond baby wasn't the same anymore. She started crying every time someone tried to take her in arms, screaming and violently fussing all over until that person left her alone. She didn't even tolerate her mother anymore.Blanche couldn't do anything but watch the toddler and silently cry, because her husband didn't seem to care and everyone else was simply too busy to notice.
All this time, day by day, Maximilian, her husband, seemed to break away from everything and everyone, spending less and less time with his wife and child. Most of the days and part of the nights he spent in his apartments, bent over maps, measuring and calculating distances with different strangers.
But her husband's detachment and their daughter's strange behavior didn't stop the two spouses from to fulfilling their duties as husband and wife and in the winter of 1621 Blanche gave birth to a male heir. The baby boy was christened and named Philibert de Valois, Duke of Angoulême, receiving every nobles' best wishes. But for Blanche everything was just another tiring and painful experience. At least she accomplished her duty and gave birth to a heir, so she hoped that her husband will leave her alone from now on.
Everything happened a little different though.
One morning, only a month after the birth to their son, Blanche woke up and realized that her husband wasn't in the castle anymore. His apartments were the same but he didn't spent the night there.Only a couple of hours later some servants informed her that Maximilian had left the castle that night.Blanche wasn't sure is she should be relived or worried about this, but for the moment she got back to her work. With or without her husband, things wouldn't be too different around.
Three months later, in an official letter from her father she found that Maximilian went aboard a ship that left for the New World.Unfortunately the same letter said that the ship had been attacked by pirates somewhere around the coast and that there were no information about the crew.Blanche crumpled the letter, throwing it into the fire and watched her son.The little boy was his father's perfect copy, with his cold blue eyes and blond hair, so the Princess felt a little guilty about not feeling too attached to him.
So the little boy spent most of his time with his baby farmers or with Françoise, his mother's lady-in-waiting.
Isabelle grew up and became a beautiful and faraway blond fugitive eidolon in the white castle. She was still very distant and refused to talk to anyone, spending most of her time playing the piano or watching the frozen fountain.
With her heart beating so strong to almost break her chest and her hands cold, Princess Blanche de Croy stepped into her husband.Only a couple of days ago this moment seemed so far ... And now, after only exchanging a couple of short and formal phrases the two of them were getting married.
Not that she was displeased with her husband's persona. He was actually a very young and handsome gentleman, but she simply felt like they needed to spend more time together before getting married to each other. But that wasn't exactly her choice, so Blanche bit her lower lip and accepted her destiny.
After the wedlock, the the two newlyweds along with their guests headed to their new residence, the castle which represented the King's gift for the new pair.
Intoxicated with the sweet French whine, strong perfumes and staggering dancing, Blanche and Maximilian barely managed to see each other the whole evening.
Only before the sunrise, after the bacchanals seemed to temper, Blanche took refuge on the balcony, letting the autumn wind cool her and dry her sweaty forehead. Her husband followed her and, for the first time in that night, the two of them shared a dance and then retreated in their bedchamber.
With their families' constant visits the couple's first two years of marriage flew quickly, without major events.
In 1617 Blanche gave birth to twin girls, whom they named Isabelle, after Blanche's mother, the Queen, and Marie.Although Blanche was relieved that after such an exhausting birth her daughters were healthy, Maximilian couldn't guise his disappointment that his wife didn't manage to give him a son.
The whole pregnancy and especially the birth of her daughters left Blanche very reluctant about her husband's plans for a heir. They already had two beautiful daughters, so there was no reason to rush.Even months after she gave birth, she refused Maximilian's pashes, making a good hand in enraging her husband and tickling up the servants' inquisitiveness.
Unfortunately, in 1619, Marie and Isabelle fell ill with smallpox and one of the sisters died after a week of high fever.Blanche spent all of her nights beside her daughters' beds, not caring that she might fell ill too and ignoring all the servant's warnings. When Marie died, the poor young mother got off into a dead faint and woke up only two weeks later.
Being raised in the shadow of his brother, the perfect Prince Charles who tragically died before he was even born, Prince Jean Gaston de Croy became an introverted boy.Having to listen the same stories all around the Royal Court about how charming, intelligent and charismatic his brother used to be didn't help either. So Jean Gaston simply chose to ignore everyone and spend most of his time alone, roaming all around the Court, from the darkest recess to the old empty dungeons.

All this time the three Princesses, Jean Gaston's older sisters(Madame Royale, Princess Angelique and Princess Cecile) followed by their friend, Zanzi, spent their time chatting, gossiping and improving their skills. In their brother's eyes the girls were born for such a life: their were beautiful, charismatic and very intelligent, never bored or exhausted from the many balls they attended.

All that the King and the Queen could do was to watch as the little Prince isolated himself even more from the outside world. They couldn't stop wondering what kind of King will he become one day.
Unaware of all the problems around her, Madame Royale, Princess Blanche de Croy continued to dream even more. She hadn't even met her betrothed, young Baron Maximilian de Valois.
Meanwhile, her father, the King, dealt will all the political arrangements regarding his daughter's wedding.
The Baron's family wasn't the richest one from France, but their reputation and name has been unblemished for centuries. An alliance with them would be the best choice now.The King continued to repeat this to himself, while at the same time hoping that his daughter will have a happy life with the one he chose for her.
When the Queen found she was pregnant again, the entire Royal Family and their close friends, followed by their trusted servants left the Court and moved to their spring Residence, where Isabelle was going to give birth.
Even if they already had three beautiful children (two daughters and a son), both the Queen and the King were happy about their fourth baby and hoped for a younger brother for the Crown Prince.

At their arrival at the Spring Residence, the Royal Family met with Guigues d'Albon and his young wife, Marie Victoire. They were spending the spring there too, so the two noble families decided to enjoy the warm season together, away from the crowded and restless Royal Court back from Paris.
Marie Victoire also had a little surprise for the Queen, offering her the latter-day fad: a little black girl from Senegal, named Zanzi.
The young Senegalese charmed everyone, being full of life and befriending the nobles' children, especially Princess Blanche de Croy.Queen Isabella adored her gift and soon started to treat her as her own daughter.

Zanzi wore the same dresses as the Princess and also attended dance and music lessons with the Royal children.

Unfortunately, in 1907, the Crown Prince got measles and in only a few weeks died. The King and the Queen were devastated by the child's tragic death and Princess' Cecile's birth didn't manage to comfort the mourning parents. Not even Zanzi's nimble attitude didn't seem to bring the smile back on their faces.
Soon after those events, everyone returned to the Court, where, in 1611 Prince Jean Gaston de Croy, Count of Barcelona, was born and everyone seemed a little more confident about the Kingdom's future.

In 1912, Madame Royale (King Philip and Queen Isabellas'oldest daughter, Blanche de Croy) was betrothed to Maximilian de Valois. But Madame Royale and Maximilian's antagonist tempers predicted a stirring marriage.

Life in the Royal Court was a very pleasant one, even for the servants.

Until the royal family's first born arrived, Blanche, the midwife was in charge of the house. She had to supervise the other servants and make sure everything is perfect for the King and his wife.
In this time, King Philip and his wife, Queen Isabella seemed more in love than ever.Even if at the beginning it was just an arranged marriage, a contract between France and Spain, the two monarchs fell in love at the first sign.
Isabella's gentle nature and suave smile charmed the young King, who never believed that he'll met a girl like her.Of course, for the young heiress of Spain it was the same. She fell in love with her fiancé's candor.
Even if both of them were young and life as the rules of a big country was a difficult one, they managed to deal with everything. With the help of council, of course.

Queen Isabella's first pregnancy was a smooth one and even if the young future mother was a little worried, Babette, the trusty midwife calmed and helped her with everything. And so their first child, a beautiful baby daughter was born. She was named Blanche, Duchess of Savoy and everyone was delighted with how spirited the baby was.

Despite everyone's oppositions and protests, the Queen insisted to breastfeed her baby and in the end everyone had to accept her stubbornness and admit that she was a wonderful mother.
The King was pleased with the beautiful daughter that his wife gave him and often liked to watch Isabella spending time with the baby, singing lullabies or telling tales.Even so, most of the time he was busy with his attributions as the King.

One and a half year later, their first son was born at the midnight. His birth surprised everyone, because he wasn't expected until two months later.Even so, he was a strong baby, full of life.He was named Charles, Prince of France and of Navarre.
